Emergency Response Teams and the Utah Valley University Police Department are the only persons authorized to enter a dangerous/hazardous area. Building occupants must evacuate when the alarm sounds or have been instructed to do so by Public Safety, Facilities, or Administrative Representative. Please remain outside until an authorized individual indicates it is safe to return inside.
If you are involved in a situation where someone has entered the area and started shooting, the following is a list of actions that are recommended. It should be noted that these types of incidents are unpredictable. The listed guidelines are recommendations that are based on past experiences. You may have to alter some of these suggestions depending on the situation.

EMERGENCY PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
As with individuals, the UVU community would suffer trauma in the aftermath of disasters or gruesome crimes. The campus community would experience a sort of paralysis immediately following the incident. Almost everyone is in shock, yet each individual is likely to react with a different set of emotions. Also, caregivers in the community (fire, police, etc.), wanting to help in the crisis, may themselves be affected by a sense of shock.
The UVU crisis team would respond to assist victims of traumatic stress on our campus. Using the National Organization For Victim Assistance (NOVA) team would provide psychological support for survivors after a crisis. Crisis team services would include, but are not be limited to, crisis intervention, post-trauma counseling, group crisis intervention, death notifications, etc.
There are three primary tasks the team performs:
UVU Police Department has several C.I.T. Officers who are certified through Wasatch Mental Health in dealing with the mentally ill.
BEFORE AN EMERGENCY OCCURS:
SAFETY TIPS:
In the event of a heavy snow storm or other severe storm, it is possible that UVU's schedule may change: one or more campuses may open late, classes may be cancelled, staff offices may be closed, or evening classes may dismissed early.
MORNING SCHEDULE CHANGE
If serious overnight storms cause a change in the university's schedule, local TV and radio stations will be contacted by College Marketing and Communications as early in the morning as possible, and will be asked to broadcast the necessary information:
EVENING SCHEDULE CHANGE
Changes to evening class schedule will be broadcast during the day on local TV and radio stations when weather conditions prevail the whole day.
When severe storms begin in the evening hours, classes in session will be contacted and informed about early closing.
WHEN CONFRONTED BY A THREATENING PERSON
IMMEDIATELY DIAL 911
A POLICE DISPATCHER WILL ASK:
STAY ON THE LINE as long as it takes. Then leave the phone off the hook.
DO NOT CONFRONT THE SUSPECT!
Help the police by reporting any crime as soon as you can. The chances of catching someone increases with the least amount of time that goes by.
UVU is committed to maintaining a safe work environment. Given the increasing level of violence in society, UVU has adopted the following guidelines to deal with intimidation, harassment, threats, or other acts of violence that may occur on its premises.
UVU encourages employees to bring their disputes or differences with other UVU community members to the attention of their supervisors or to the Office of People and Culture before the situation escalates into potential violence.
CALL CAMPUS POLICE AT 801-863-5555
Violent or potentially violent incidents may include:
IF YOU SEE OR HEAR A VIOLENT INCIDENT ON CAMPUS
Report ALL such incidents to College Police IMMEDIATELY!
DO NOT try to intervene in a violent situation.
If you hear a disturbance near your work area, do not attempt to investigate to "see what is happening".
Leave the area as soon as your safety will permit.
FOR EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE, PLEASE DIAL 911.
IN CASE OF A WATER LEAK
IF YOU SMELL NATURAL GAS.....CALL CAMPUS POLICE AT 5555
Automated External Defibrillators are located throughout the Utah Valley University properties. The AEDs are placed in accessible areas for the general public and emergency personnel. AEDs located in main corridors can be found in white alarmed cabinets in the locations listed. AEDs are for emergency use only. Although removal of an AED or opening an AED cabinet will trigger an alarm, you will still need to call 911. Departments may request training in the use of AEDs by contacting UVU Risk Manager, Robin Ebmeyer at (801)863-7977.
AEDs are located across campus.
