UVU Crime Statistics are collected and reported to the state and federal government to assist them in tracking crime trends. In addition, UVU uses data collected from crimes occurring on campus to develop new crime-fighting programs targeting specific areas or types of crimes.
The data submitted to the state and federal government is available to the public. UVU submits National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data monthly to the Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI). BCI is responsible for collecting this data for the state of Utah and forwarding it on to the FBI.
NIBRS data is available for all police agencies in Utah from BCI.
Nationwide NIBRS data is available from the FBI.
In addition to supplying NIBRS data, UVU also reports statistics to the Office of Postsecondary Education in the U.S. Department of Education for use in the Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This tool provides customized reports related to campus crime and fire data for over 6,000 postsecondary campuses across the country.
Yes, even in Utah crimes do occur, and more often than you would think. Most crimes tend to be crimes of opportunity which can be reduced with some simple steps.
Another important function of UVUPD is making our campus users aware of how to prevent becoming a victim of crime.
If requested, one of our University police officers will talk to groups regarding Crime Awareness/Crime Prevention.
The Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety, the University Fire Marshal and other staff members are involved in a University Safety Committee which makes periodic security and safety surveys of campus facilities. Suggestions are made for improving security and safety in each area of instruction so as to improve the safety and security of students, employees and faculty.
Several times throughout the school year our University police officers will make an Officer Friendly presentation to the Wee Care Child Care Center emphasizing "police are our friends". Child safety is stressed.
The University Facilities Planning/Plant Operations Department maintains college buildings and grounds with a concern for safety and security. These facilities are inspected regularly; plant staff attempt to make prompt repairs and respond 24 hours-a-day to reports of potential safety and security hazards, such as broken windows and locks. The University Police Department assists maintenance personnel by reporting potential safety and security hazards. Students, as well as employees, are encouraged to call Facilities Planning and Maintenance (801-863-8130) to report any hazard.
Representatives from University Police/Department of Public Safety and Facilities Planning routinely inspect the entire campus to review lighting and environmental safety concerns.
Most University facilities are open to the public during the day and evening hours when classes are in session. During times that the University is officially closed, University buildings are generally locked and only employees, faculty and authorized students with proper I.D. are admitted.
