Course Fundamentals

While academic departments and Faculty Supervisors have the autonomy to design their internship courses according to their style and academic discipline, there are university expectations and resources to ensure a quality internship experience for students. Below are guidelines and resources to help you identify the requirements for a UVU internship course, as well as optional resources, including templates. Please note that all university-required internship tasks and assignments must be completed each semester the student is enrolled.

Prior to the Course

Crosslisting Courses

Instructors can cross-list sections in Canvas to streamline grading and content updates across multiple sections of the same course. Cross-listing requests should be made after finalizing the teaching schedule but before uploading content. For internships, we recommend 3 weeks before the semester starts.

Grading Format

Course Recommendation

Determining the grading format for your course is dependent on factors such as departmental policy, internship type, and academic rigor. While it is common for Pass/Fail courses to be used for internship courses, students may have a more academic and dedicated approach if the students’ performance is assessed using a traditional grading scale.  The Career and Internship Center recommends using a traditional grading scale, however, this determination is ultimately up to each department.

Canvas Course Setup

We offer optional course content to help Faculty Supervisors build effective internship courses and understand the types of assignments that enhance students' internship experiences through structure and career preparation. Faculty Supervisors are encouraged to use the materials we have created for internship courses in Canvas, beyond the already required assignments. These materials are designed to complement the unique assignments of each faculty member's internship course. Choose below to learn more about the template as well as the content that is automatically imported into internship courses each semester. On this page, you will find essential materials and guides to help you set up and operate your Canvas course.
