Process

Required course content (Supervisor Evaluation, Completion Assessment) is automatically imported into your internship course each semester through the Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL). This generally occurs 7-10 days prior to the upcoming semester.   If you do not see this content in your course after the first day of the semester (usually because of a late-added section after the semester starts), you can import the assignments manually from Canvas Commons.  You can also contact Marty Overly, Career and Internship Center with any questions.

If you are visiting this link from your canvas course and the content has already been imported into your course, you can skip to the section, "After Content Import". The FAQ section is also useful if you have specific questions about the assignments.

Manual Import Instructions

The instructions below are for mid-semester imports for newly added internship sections or accidently deleted content.  The Career and Internship Center new sections mid-semester, but this is a quick and convenient way for you to get the content.

  1. Visit the existing canvas internship course you would like to update. In the icon list on the left of your screen (courses, calendar, inbox, etc.) and select the commons icon in the green menu bar.
  2. In the search bar of Commons type "utah valley". You will then select "Utah Valley University Internship Courses (Import for Required Missing Content)". Do not select the Utah Valley University Internship Course Template unless you also want to include optional assignments in your course.
  3. Check the box for your existing course and select "Import into Canvas" and Voilà!, the content has been imported. Now see the section "After Content Import" below. The FAQ section is also useful if you have specific questions about the assignments.

After Content Import

  1. Outdated Content: If you have similar, but outdated content in your course, you will want to delete the previous semester's Supervisor Evaluation and Completion Assessment content (go to the Assignments tab. Simply deleting a module will not delete the assignments themselves). Check the assignment headings to ensure the correct content is reflected.
  2. Imported Content Module:  Feel free to rename or move the assignments to new modules. Unless you are experienced with the assignment source code editor, we do not recommend editing the assignment pages for the required assignments as the pages have specific code that connects to your grade book. You can however change assignment dates and point values.
  3. Save and publish your content: Once you are satisfied with your course, ensure that all appropriate modules and assignments are published. A common error observed is the publishing of assignments but not the modules, so be aware of this! Finally, publish the course! Congratulations! You are good to go!

Faq and Troubleshooting

How does grading work for assignments?

Completion Assessment: Canvas will automatically assign a 100% score after completion.

Supervisor Evaluations: For both the end of semester Supervisor Evaluation (required) and Mid-Term Supervisor Evaluation (optional), a 10% point value is assigned after the student initiates the assignment. The grade will be changed to 100% score after the supervisor completes their portion of the evaluation. You have the option of adjusting point values after completion.

Other Assignments: All other assignments are graded by the course instructor.

What if students are reporting technical issues with the assignments?

A Career and Internship Center representative will work with the student to get any issues resolved. Common problems include browser compatibility issues or in the case of supervisor evaluations, an organization's strict email security settings. The learning objectives, completion assessment, and supervisor evaluation assignments all include a link to a Support Form that is managed through our center. We do not expect you to try and solve any technical issues.

Does my previous semester content get overwritten?

No. After import, go to your Assignments and Pages tabs to see all of your content.  In the case of the Supervisor Evaluation and Completion Assessment, you will want to delete older semester versions of these assignments.

I have multiple copies of the same assignment in my course?

If the content you imported has the same title as your existing content, you will see the content much like you would on your computer if you saved a file under the same name. Example: Assignment, Assignment-1, Assignment-2 (all reflecting the same assignment title). Compare them and delete any outdated content. Check the semester in the assignment title, however, to ensure you aren't deleting the most recent version of the assignment.

Why does my course suddenly look empty or misconfigured?

Depending on your current course settings, your course may look differently after content is added to your course. Your content is not deleted or moved. To alleviate this, please go to the "Choose Home Page" setting on the right-hand side of the page and choose your desired view. See image below.
