Field Education

Field Education for Agencies

  • Students are placed with agencies whose mission and values are compatible with both the NASW Code of Ethics and CSWE accreditation standards.
  • Students must receive at least one hour of weekly supervision with an individual who has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) for at least two years.
  • Student practicums run concurrently with UVU's academic calendar, beginning in mid-August and concluding at the end of April.
  • Agencies are invited to attend an annual Field Fair held in February, which initiates the placement process for the following academic year.
  • Supervisors are invited to attend an annual Field Instructor Conference in mid-September, which includes an opportunity to earn free CE credits.

Field Education for Students

  • First-year MSW students complete a 400-hour generalist practicum, which includes opportunities for social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
  • Second-year and advanced standing MSW students complete a 550-hour advanced generalist practicum, which may include an emphasis on working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, or communities.
  • Students have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including elementary and secondary schools, correctional facilities, hospitals, residential treatment centers, recovery programs,  domestic violence shelters, mental health clinics, inpatient psychiatric facilities, and victim advocacy programs. 
  • In addition to receiving weekly agency-based supervision, students meet for a weekly integrative seminar to discuss practicum-related challenges and receive support and guidance from MSW program faculty and peers.
