Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Upward Bound Program?

The Upward Bound (UB) Program provides accepted participants the skills and motivation necessary to complete a secondary education program and to enter and succeed in a postsecondary education program.

What kinds of activities can be supported with grant funds?

Any project assisted under the UB Program must provide:

  • Access to Academic tutoring to enable students to complete secondary or postsecondary courses, which may include instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, science and other subjects;
  • Advice and assistance in secondary and postsecondary course selection;
  • Assistance in preparing for college entrance examinations and completing college admission applications;
  • Information on the full range of Federal student financial aid programs and benefits (including Federal Pell Grant awards and loan forgiveness) and resources for locating public and private scholarships;
  • Guidance on and assistance in secondary school reentry; alternative education programs for secondary school dropouts that lead to the receipt of a regular secondary school diploma; entry into general educational development (GED) programs or entry into postsecondary education;
  • Education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students or the students’ parents, including financial planning for postsecondary education.
  • Any project that has received funds for at least two years must include as part of its core curriculum in the next and succeeding years, instruction in mathematics through pre-calculus; laboratory science; foreign language; composition; and literature.

An UB project may provide the following services:

  • Exposure to cultural events, academic programs, and other activities not usually available to disadvantaged youth;
  • Information, activities, and instruction designed to acquaint youth participating in the project with the range of career options available to the youth;
  • On-campus residential programs;
  • Mentoring programs involving elementary school or secondary school teachers or counselors, faculty members at institutions of higher education, students, or any combination of these persons;
  • Programs and activities that are specially designed for participants who are limited English proficient; participants from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, participants who are individuals with disabilities, participants who are homeless children and youths, participants in or who are aging out of foster care, or other disconnected participants;
  • Other activities designed to meet the purposes of the UB Program.

What is the duration of the average grant?

All UB grants are funded for five-year grant award cycles.

How much does Upward Bound cost?

It is free. It is a federal grant, so the participants do not pay anything to participate.

Can my child attend the summer program if they are not a member of Upward Bound?

No. Students who attend the Summer Program must be active participants accepted into the UB program.

If my child resides within the boundary of a target school, but attends a different school can they still participate in Upward Bound?

No. Since we are a federal grant, we are only allowed to serve students in the schools that have been written into the grant.

What happens if I no longer meet low-income levels?

You only have to qualify as low-income when you apply to the program. If your low-income status changes after you have been accepted, it doesn’t affect your status of being in the program. The same should be said if a parent doesn’t have a college degree. If a parent received a college degree after the student has been accepted in UB, this would not affect their status or participation in the program.

What personal information do you need for my child and why?

Because we are a federal grant, we are required to collect information, for example, your social security number, a transcript, and your parents' federal taxes to verify income status.

Do participants need to apply each year?

Once you have been accepted into the UB program, you do not need to reapply to participate.

What happens if my child’s grades drop below 2.5 GPA?

We are required by the federal government to help keep the students' GPA above 2.5. If the student falls below, we will meet with the student to come up with a plan on how we can help them raise their GPA.

How are students selected for the program?

We are always looking for students to join our program who qualify. We ask current members for family members. We also ask school counselors to recommend students who would be a good fit for Upward Bound.

What must students who are accepted into the program do to remain in the program?

The students must be actively participating in the program and keeping their GPA above 2.5 to remain in the program. They must also be attending the weekly meetings with their Academic Advisor.

If I am accepted to Upward Bound, do I need to attend UVU?

No. Since we are a federal grant, we do not actively recruit for UVU. Students can choose to go to any college.

What happens if the program is full? Are there other options?

If we are full, we will place the student on a waiting list until space becomes available.

When are applications for Upward Bound due?

We are actively recruiting and want to be fully recruited by December of each year. There are only about 5-7 spaces available at each school each year.

What high schools does UVU’s TRIO Upward Bound Program serve?

Uintah High, Union High, Wasatch High, Orem High and Provo High.
