What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a program that will help you succeed in your GEs. Courses with SI will have free study sessions outside of class led by an SI Leader -– a fellow student who has previously taken the course. Participating in SI study sessions helps you to review and retain course content and connect with classmates!

Why SI?

The SI Program gives you additional exposure to course content outside of class which helps you form a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of the subject. But don’t just take it from us! Supplemental Instruction has been around for decades, used in college classes around the world, and has plenty of research that proves its effectiveness.

SI Leaders

SI Leaders are current UVU students who have previously taken the class and are knowledgeable on the material. They are trained to run effective study sessions and to teach study skills that can be in class and throughout your college career. SI Leaders will also attend in-person courses and be available for support via Canvas.

What Courses Offer SI?

If you’re taking a course that uses SI, an SI Leader will introduce themselves during in-person class or on Canvas. SI is most commonly offered with GE (General Education) classes that students have historically struggled in, such as Biology, College Algebra, and even Human Anatomy.
