Classes are taught Monday - Friday, 5:30pm-9:30pm, and on Saturday from 8:00am - 5:00pm, totaling a required 29 hours a week.

Costs

The Police Academy is a part of UVU’s Criminal Justice program and financial aid is available. Contact the Financial Aid office at (801)863-8442. You can apply for scholarship opportunities through the Scholarship Office at UVU Financial Aid Office Website.

  • $150 application processing fee (non-refundable).
  • $20 fee (check or money order only to BCI) the first week of class for fingerprinting and a background check through the Bureau of Criminal Identification.
  • $2,100 for module 1 tuition plus approximately $600+ for uniforms and equipment.
  • $3,100 for module 2 tuition plus approximately $500+ for required gear and ammunition.

Modules

Special Functions Officer (SFO) - Module 1

The first module (7 credit hours) of the academy contains the training hours necessary to be certified as a Special Function Officer (SFO). An SFO Certification allows a person to work in a limited number of Special Function positions such as a transportation officer or an SFO Officer at the State Hospital. The SFO training module consists of hours made up primarily of Criminal Code, Physical Fitness, Arrest Control and various other classes. You must pass the first module to continue on to the second module. SFO classes are scheduled twice a year in January and September.

Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) - Module 2

The second module (11 credit hours), commonly called the LEO module, is where the action is. Classes include Accident Investigation, Firearms, Crimes in Progress, Patrol, Sex Crimes Investigations, Physical Fitness, Arrest Control and many others. In order to become certifiable as a law enforcement officer, students must complete the first module and then the second module. LEO classes are scheduled twice a year in January and May.

  • Students will complete all law enforcement training required by the state of Utah to become certifiable in this career field.
  • Emphasizes criminal and traffic laws, and the proper means of enforcing them.
  • Ethics and professionalism as well as police-community relations are a priority.
  • Training will also include proficiency with de-escalation tactics, firearms, arrest control techniques and physical fitness.
  • Students conduct investigations, prepare reports, and experience testimony in a moot court.
