241 Department navigation
Edit department site navigation bar
The site navigation, or "department navigation" is the gray horizontal navigation bar that appears below the header. This tutorial demonstrates how to edit the navigation bar near the top of your department pages. Editing your navigation bar on one page will affect the navigation bar throughout your entire department site.
Guidelines for department navigation bar
Each site or sub-site has its own department navigation bar. Because the navigation bar is generated using single file specific to its own site, the same items will appear in the nav bar for the entire site. Individual pages in a site can't have separate navigation items from the rest of the site.
Navigation items that extend beyond the width of the page will scroll horizontally, but this should be avoided when possible for better usability.
Sites may have up to eight items in the navigation bar.
Sites must have at least one item in the department navigation.
Which links should be in department navigation?
Academic department/program sites
For academic department/program sites, the navigation bar should include the following items as the first items in the navigation, in this order:
- College/School home
- Programs & Degrees
- Advising
- Financial Aid & Scholarships
- Content Hub
Academic College and School Sites
The navigation for academic colleges and schools must have the following four navigation items in this particular order as the first navigation items listed:
- Programs & Degrees
- Advising
- Financial Aid & Scholarships
- Content Hub
- Make a Gift
Non-Academic Sites
For non-academic department sites, there are not specific navigation items to include, but the items in the navigation bar should help visitors to the site easily find what they are looking for. When deciding on navigation bar items, try to consider what terms might be familiar to your visitors in navigating to content.
