1001 Writing Content for the Web

Tips for writing for the web

Writing for websites is different than other writing styles. Most people prefer to scan pages to find information, rather than reading lengthy paragraphs of text.

Tips to improve the content on your site:

  • Keep your sentences short and to the point.
  • Use descriptive headings to help users find what they are looking for.
  • Always keep your audience in mind, and write in a way that makes sense to them.
  • Use bulleted or numbered lists to help break up big blocks of text and make pages more readable.
  • Always review your content after writing it to make sure it makes sense, and to check for spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Avoid non-descriptive links (such as "click here"); links should be integrated naturally into your text.
  • Don't treat your website like an archive. Keep it updated, and only keep content that is useful to your audience.
