Director’s Note
There are moments in life that call for gravity and other moments that demand a little levity. After over a year slogging through the pandemic (and all of its repercussions on singing and the arts), now seems like a great time for the latter. Each year I’m amazed at the buzz that surrounds comic conventions. People come out in droves, dressed up like their favorite movie, comic, and video game characters hoping to be seen and maybe get an autograph or two from an actor. It has become a bit of a craze, an outlet for people to create costumes and relive the stories they have come to love. This production of OperaCon is intended to explore, and even poke fun of Comic-Con and opera by mashing up both idioms. To fully appreciate some of the humor, one would ideally be quite familiar with both the opera and the pop culture that will be reflected in each scene. However, we hope that regardless, this show will provide a little laughter for everyone, along with the much needed balm of beautiful operatic singing.
