Welcome to this summer’s Sundance production of The Sound of Music! By Audience request, this is the first time that we will repeat a show in the sixteen years since Sundance and UVU began our partnership. The mountain setting for this iconic musical could not be more perfect, and we are delighted to bring its message of family, love, and courage to audiences once again.
Why is this story so endearing to us? Much can be attributed to the music, which unites the characters against a common enemy. Many of us grew up watching the movie and singing along with Maria and the Von Trapp children. It is hard to leave the lyrics of "Climb Every Mountain" or "The Lonely Goatherd" in the theatre after the show is over.
While many things in the world may have changed since our 2011 production, the beauty of the mountains and the message of this sixty-year-old musical remain a constant. Sundance is indeed a magical place to experience this show. Thank you for joining us this summer. The Sundance Summer Theatre is truly one of our favorite things.

One of the many reasons I have found myself in the career of making theatre is the educational aspect of storytelling. The edification that occurs through theatre is rather exciting – how the audience gets to escape real life for a moment to have a good laugh, or relate to the characters, learn about the past, or even give hope for something that could be better in the future. As an actor myself, I have especially been fascinated at how theatre has taught me about empathy for the human condition, by simply daring to believe in someone else’s circumstances and tell their unique story. It’s incredible to be a part of something that makes people feel, think, and learn. Similarly, I have always loved The Sound of Music. I grew up watching the movie and loved Julie Andrews – she is so talented - and she can yodel too?! As a teenager, I played a postulant in the nun chorus and grew to respect this piece even more. When presented with the opportunity to direct this project, I admit I was a little intimidated. I’ve always held it in such high regard, and it felt like big shoes to fill.
Directors are often asked for a directing concept to start off a project. It’s a way to communicate with the design team about what you envision for this particular production, and sometimes this concept will take a Shakespearean classic and set it in the Roaring 20’s or take a play in the public domain and set it in the future, with gender swapped roles and post-apocalyptic costumes. This piece does not allow for any of that. The Anschluss of Germany and Austria anchors us to the time period and the music anchors us to the classic musical theatre style. However, it never really occurred to me to do anything with it but simply tell the story. It is what I call a “true classic” of the musical theatre canon. In addition to the beautiful music, it is still relevant to today’s audience. It has captivating characters, a relatable undertone of political tensions, and a great love story. Setting it in this beautiful mountainous setting here at Sundance is the cherry on top. To do more than this would just get in the way.
I have enjoyed taking a deeper dive into this story and getting to know it more fully. Dispersed between the catchy tunes and fun that Maria brings to the Von Trapp home, we are also reminded of what it means to grieve, fall short, change life paths, heal relationships, find love, and have faith – all set to the backdrop of the Third Reich, which is rather relatable to our current headlines. It’s been an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with bringing it to life for you tonight. We’ve done our best to create something new while honoring the classic, to give it our own flavor while capturing the iconic, and to remain in gratitude of the opportunity it is to tell this beautiful story. Thank you for joining us tonight and enjoy the show!
