Tristan Gray began his training at 6 years old with the renowned Furious Styles Crew under B-boy House in Phoenix, Arizona with an emphasis on Funk and Hip Hop styles. During this time, he also gained formal studio training in various genres of dance including Contemporary, Ballet, Musical Theatre and Jazz. In Arizona and in his later home of Seattle, Washington, Tristan had the opportunity to perform regularly in the commercial field for companies and teams including Radio Disney, Phoenix Mercury, Phoenix Suns, and the Seattle Supersonics. In Seattle, Washington under Breaking Point Dance Company, Tristan was able to participate with his crew in Hip Hop International’s USA and World Competition for 2 years and achieved a preliminary national title. This was all before 12 years of age. At the same age, Tristan moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and worked as a guest performer with Odyssey Dance Theatre for 3 years, all while continuing his formal dance and Hip Hop training whilst traveling across the country, or at Center Stage Performing Arts Studio in Orem, Utah. By this point, Tristan has spread his scope of work to film, television, stage, and music video. At 17 years of age, Tristan’s passion fell into the realm of teaching and facilitating the next generation of dancers, with having even participated in the direction of a non-profit organization for youth, Utah Urban Dance Organization, from 2015-2018. With 20+ years of dance training and 10 years of teaching experience, he has been able to share his knowledge at prestigious organizations and institutions such as Cornell University, Ballet West, and Brigham Young University. Tristan is passionate about culture, history, and ingenuity, as he focuses on the true meaning and beginnings of Hip Hop and Funk styles, while pairing that with heavy focus on individualism and creative opportunity for each dancer. His teaching scope has also extended past Hip Hop and has merged into Contemporary styles as well, exploring with new movement and musical development. He currently holds a directorial position at American Expression of Dance in Draper, Utah, a teaching position at SLC Herc in South Salt Lake, Utah and has also coupled his dancing with a passion in architecture, having received his Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Utah in May of 2023. He now not only wants to facilitate dancers and their talents, but also create space, shelter, and opportunity for all people to experience, enjoy, and collaborate.

land acknowledgment

Land acknowledgement

Utah Valley University acknowledges that we gather on land sacred to all Indigenous people who came before us in this vast crossroads region. The University is committed to working in partnership—as enacted through education and community activities—with Utah’s Native Nations comprising: the San Juan Southern Paiute, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Uintah & Ouray Reservation of the Northern Ute, Skull Valley Goshute, Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation, Northwestern Band of Shoshone Nation, Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute-White Mesa Community, and urban Indian communities. We recognize these Native Nations and their continued connections with traditional homelands, mountains, rivers, and lakes as well as their sovereign relationships with state and federal governments. We honor their collective memory and continued physical and spiritual presence. We revere their resilience and example in preserving their connections to the Creator and to all their relations, now and in the future.

With this statement comes responsibility and accountability. We resolve to follow up with actionable items to make the School of the Arts at UVU and The Noorda Center for the Performing Arts an inclusive, equitable, and just space for all. There is much work to be done, and we are committed to putting these words into practice.
