Madly, in your name I called
All the names, all the adored women,
All the flowers of the forest, all the goddesses,
All the women in the world,
In the books of history
And in all of the paintings,
All of the lovers of the poets,
Madly, I was calling God.
My love is bigger than me,
Bigger than this world.
The poor lovers crowned me king of vision
And imam of banishment and exile.
Madly, in your name, I was calling God.

“See Me Closely” reflects on the challenges of vulnerability and connection. We are navigating a world of instant labels or mislabels, an age of relationships between screens over embodied interactions, a practice around editing ourselves for social media glimpses, and a technical evolution of feeling more connected than ever. How do we embrace these parts of our living and also maintain real connected honesty? How do we be listeners instead of labelers, and ultimately, see each other for the intimate, human, and whole versions of ourselves?

land acknowledgment

land

Utah Valley University acknowledges that we gather on land sacred to all Indigenous people who came before us in this vast crossroads region. The University is committed to working in partnership—as enacted through education and community activities—with Utah’s Native Nations comprising: the San Juan Southern Paiute, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Uintah & Ouray Reservation of the Northern Ute, Skull Valley Goshute, Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation, Northwestern Band of Shoshone Nation, Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute-White Mesa Community, and urban Indian communities. We recognize these Native Nations and their continued connections with traditional homelands, mountains, rivers, and lakes as well as their sovereign relationships with state and federal governments. We honor their collective memory and continued physical and spiritual presence. We revere their resilience and example in preserving their connections to the Creator and to all their relations, now and in the future.

With this statement comes responsibility and accountability. We resolve to follow up with actionable items to make the School of the Arts at UVU and The Noorda Center for the Performing Arts an inclusive, equitable, and just space for all. There is much work to be done, and we are committed to putting these words into practice.

Now what? Land acknowledgements are just a starting point. There are many approaches an individual may take to move from the important step of acknowledging the ancestral and contemporary territories of tribal nations to direct action. Consider the following:

  • Increase your understanding of this histories and cultures of Native American and Indigenous peoples. To deepen your knowledge of Utah’s tribal nations, please visit https://indian.utah.gov/ and/or enroll in an American Indian Studies course at UVU;
  • Learn more about and support Indigenous arts and cultures by becoming familiar with organizations like the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation and Cultural Survival;
  • Support Indigenous-led grassroots change movements and campaigns;
  • Engage with advocacy organizations supporting Indigenous People’s land and civil rights, self-determination, cultures, and political resilience, like the LANDBACK MOVEMENT.
