Producer's Note

Welcome to the Sundance Summer Theatre production of the new version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. We are delighted to continue this powerful, 15-year collaboration between Sundance Mountain Resort and Utah Valley University that brings students, educators, and community members together to mount spectacular musicals in this incredible mountain setting.

The tale of Cinderella that we are most familiar with comes from France and Germany and yet seems to embody the American dream. It’s a riches-to-rags-to-riches story in which good people prosper because of their talents, virtues, and choices. The recently updated script, paired with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic songs, features young people who learn and grow and thrive: Ella, whose worth is recognized by herself and others; Topher, who proves himself a respectable leader; Gabrielle, who breaks free of her society’s constrictions; and Marie, who sees the magic in each of them.

Sundance Mountain Resort is a magical place to experience this timeless story. We lift our eyes in the hills and find hope as we dream a story together each summer. To paraphrase Oscar Hammerstein’s lyrics from the show, we find our hearts flying over mountain and meadow and glen, and we like it so well that, for all we can tell, we may never come down again.

Cinderella makes us believe we can make the impossible possible and can draw strength from the magic within us. Tonight, let’s enjoy this magic on the mountain together.

Director's Note

Just over ten years ago, the world seemed to stop for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. I wasn’t British and I wasn’t living in London at the time, but despite my lack of real interest, I couldn't seem to escape this wedding. Everywhere I went, people were buzzing about it, the pictures were on display, and the footage ran on repeat across every imaginable screen.

Not really in my defense, I was a cynical and jaded single man living in Los Angeles at the time. I couldn't understand why anyone would take time away from their lives to be interested in anything having to do with the royal family.

Then I heard a wise man describe the beauty and innocence associated with a royal wedding in this way: “It is a rare thing to be witness to a young woman becoming an actual princess, elevating her external status to match what is so clearly present in her already. We get to watch the ritual formality of a union made public beyond any civil ceremony and join with more than family, but subjects and even God to bring hope to the masses.” I am paraphrasing, of course, but I was caught off guard and forced to reconsider my position.

A few years later I saw the Broadway production of the latest version of Cinderella. I was familiar with the songs from the original Rodgers and Hammerstein classic but I hadn’t seen it on stage. In a word… I was delighted. Here was a show steeped in not only the depiction of royalty, though make-believe, but heavy-handed at times in its message of kindness and hope, and I was charmed and excited to watch the story unfold. I felt my previous cynicism fade as I gave into the fairy tale completely. I was lifted off my chair and sent home happier, more curious about the everyday stories going on around me, maybe even a touch more convinced that the power of falling in love could shatter formerly unbreakable barriers. This new version of the story was witty, heartfelt, whimsical, and even magical.

This is something musical theatre does well: it lifts us out of our seats and reminds us there is great value to optimism, kindness, hope and innocence. I think we, as people, are desperate to believe in goodness that is greater than ourselves. Whether the real-life story of Will and Kate, or the fictional tale you will see tonight, these kinds of stories remind us that we can be made more interesting, more selfless, and more joyful through the power of relationships, even those that seem impossible. I hope the magic of this story elevates and inspires you as it has me.
