Biographies

Kendra Hamblin

Kendra Hamblin

Kendra Hamblin enjoys a rich performing career. She has performed as a soloist with various orchestras and has performed as a featured artist with groups such as the Salt Lake City Gay Men’s Chorus and the UVU Women’s Chorus. Ms. Hamblin serves as principal flute of the Wind Symphony at Utah Valley University and has performed in operas and Broadway-style musicals. She maintains an active recording presence, and her music has reached millions through live radio and international television broadcasts.

Kendra has a strong connection to contemporary flute music, and has recently received praise for her socially-conscious performances of new compositions dealing with topics such as climate change and economic inequality. She often focuses on performing and recording works written by composers belonging to historically underrepresented populations, and advocates for stronger representation and more equitable treatment of marginalized groups both inside and outside of the musical community. Ms. Hamblin has been the recipient of multiple scholarships and awards for exceptional woodwind performance during her time at UVU, and was recently awarded a creative works grant to commission and record works from diverse composers.

Kaitlin Booth

Kaitlin Booth is an accomplished cellist from Eagle Mountain, Utah. She was 12 years old when she first began studying the cello, advancing quickly as she fell in love with the large range and deep, colorful tones of the instrument. Kaitlin has played with numerous high school, community, and university orchestras -- including the Utah All-State Orchestra and Utah Valley University Symphony and Chamber Ensembles -- and has won top awards at national and international solo and chamber music competitions. This semester Kaitlin will be graduating with her Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from Utah Valley University, where she has studied for the past 4 years on a performance scholarship under the direction of her teachers, Dr. Cheung Chau and Walter Haman. She adores playing and teaching cello and is excited for the opportunity to make it her lifelong career.

In her free time, Kaitlin enjoys playing jazz piano, hiking, doing yoga, eating sushi, playing pickleball, and spending time with her husband, Preston.

Cristina Aurora Villalobos

Cristina Aurora Villalobos

Cristina is an operatic Soprano from Springville, Utah. She was born in Provo, Utah to hispanic parents and began studying Opera her senior year of high school with her current teacher Dr. Isaac Hurtado. Since then, Cristina has participated in the Utah Vocal Arts Academy Summer Opera Program three times, and has performed various principal and leading roles at her University and outside it. Cristina’s most recent roles include Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème (2022), and Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (2021). Her upcoming projects include singing Mimi again, and Nella in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi at the Mediterranean Summer Opera Festival in Sicily this summer (2022). Cristina is a recent recipient of an Encouragement Award at the Laffont Metropolitan Opera Competition. The judges commended her for having “an attractive color” to her voice, as well as being a “wonderful and immensely talented” singer. When Cristina isn’t singing she can be found spending time with her family, playing with her dog Mila, or going to concerts.

Jiayi Lin

Jiayi Lin

Jiayi Lin is currently a junior at Utah Valley University studying piano performance with Dr. Karlyn Bond. She began piano lessons at age five. During high school she continued her formal study with professor Xiaobei Zhu from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, and later with pianist Dr. Hilary Demske, Chair of the Piano Department at UVU (2018-21).

Jiayi has already earned several awards in her seventeen years of piano study. She won first prize in the Liszt Memorial Prize Hong Kong International Piano Open Competition in 2011. In 2013, as leader of the school accordion team, she attended the Splendid Life of Hamburg International Arts Festival in Hamburg, Germany, and won first prize in the instrumental group. In 2016, she performed a solo recital in Guangzhou, China. Jiayi has performed in masterclasses for Professor Antonio Pompa-Baldi from the Cleveland Institute of Music; Professor Thomas Justt, Head of the Piano Department at the Bach School of Music in Berlin; and Dr. Solungga Liu of Bowling Green State University.

Joe Osterstock

Joe Osterstock

Joe Osterstock is a senior in the Commercial Music program. He began studying violin with Dr. Judd Sheranian in Salt Lake City at age four and later studied piano under Jed Moss. Joe started writing music as teenager and has written in a variety of styles including works for solo instruments, various ensembles, and electronic music; he particularly enjoys writing large orchestral works. While at UVU he has had the privilege of studying under Dr. Donna Fairbanks, Nathan Hofheins, Todd Sorenson, Charlie Han, David Baker, and Gerhard Guter. Joe works with many local musicians as a session violinist and composer/arranger. After graduation, he plans to pursue a master's degree in Film Scoring. Joe likes getting caught in the rain, playing music with friends, and a good sandwich.

Joe would also like to thank Dr. Tom Keck, Ryan Nielsen, Jeffrey O'Flynn, Cheung Chau, and Bryce Rytting as well as all the faculty and staff of the music department for their support and instruction.

Taras Krysa

Taras Krysa

The Ukrainian-born, American-based conductor Taras Krysa is establishing a reputation for innovative and inspiring music-making and leadership throughout the United States and Europe. Recently appointed as the Music Director and Conductor of Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra – the oldest professional orchestra in the Ukraine – Mr. Krysa continues to serve as the Director of Orchestras at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Taras Krysa guest conducted orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, New World Symphony, Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony, Moscow Soloists, Slovak Sinfonietta, Spoleto Festival USA Chamber Orchestra, Kiev Chamber Orchestra, the Lublin Philharmonic Orchestra, Las Vegas Philharmonic and many others. In addition, Mr. Krysa led the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra and the Slovak Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra on several European and Asian tours.

Mr. Krysa recently concluded his ninth season as the Artistic and Music Director of the Henderson Symphony Orchestra in Nevada. Under his leadership, the ensemble has seen its audience expand ten-fold and its concerts recognized as a treasured part of the cultural life of the greater Las Vegas community.

Mr. Krysa actively promotes new music and has made three critically acclaimed recordings for the Brilliant Classics label.An accomplished violinist, Taras Krysa was a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony Orchestra, and continues to maintain an active career performing chamber music.

Taras Krysa was born in Kiev into a dynasty of professional musicians. His father, Oleh Krysa, is a prominent concert violinist. His mother, Tatiana Tchekina, was as concert pianist, and his grandfather, Pavel Tchekin, was a tenor at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Mr. Krysa attended the Gnesin School of Music in Moscow before emigrating with his family to the United States 1989 where he continued his studies in conducting and violin at Indiana University and Northwestern University with Victor Yampolsky and Nelli Shkolnikova. Mr. Krysa was recipient of fellowship the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Music Festival, where he studied with Jorma Panula and David Zinman.

Don Miller

Don Miller

Don Miller is adept at working with musicians of all ages - elementary and secondary students, university students, as well as community musicians and professional performers. He has music degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Wichita State University and received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The University of Iowa. His past experience includes working in public schools and universities in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Colorado. In addition to his teaching positions, Dr. Miller has been Conductor and Music Director of the Starlight Symphony Orchestra of Wimberley, Texas, the San Antonio Symphonic Band, the West County (St. Louis) Youth Orchestra and many other ensembles. He is currently Music Director and Conductor of Orchestra Esperanza Park City, a Chamber Orchestra in Park City, Utah. In addition to his conducting and teaching experience, Dr. Miller is author of Rehearsing the Band, Volume 2.

As an advocate of new music, Dr. Miller has been responsible for commissioning over 20 works from composers such as Timothy Mahr, Andrew Boysen, Barry Morse, James Syler and others. He is also an advocate for music education and has served as a clinician for schools and conductor of honor bands across the US. He has made presentations at a number of professional conferences, including the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the Music Educators Associations of Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Wyoming, and Missouri, as well as the California and Iowa Bandmasters Associations. In addition to presentations, he has been an adjudicator for Director's Choice Music Festivals, Festivals of Music, and state and national events.
