Miserere mei (excerpt)
Gregorio Allegri (c. 1582-1652)
Linnea Miner, Andrea Church Briscoe, Matt Watson, Josh Scribner, quartet
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your great loving kindness.
And according to the multitude of your mercies, blot out my iniquity.
Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my transgression; and my sin is ever before me.
To you only have I sinned, and done evil in your sight:
That you may be justified in your words, and be vindicated when you are judged.
For behold, I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins my mother conceived me.
For behold, you have loved the truth;
The obscure and hidden elements of your wisdom you have made known to me.
You will sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed;
You will wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
Then you will accept the sacrifice of the righteous,
The oblations and the whole-burnt offerings;
Then they will lay bullocks upon your altar.
Composed around 1638, Miserere mei was the most famous of twelve settings used at the Sistine Chapel since 1514. At some point, it became forbidden to transcribe the music and it was
allowed to be performed only at those particular services at the Sistine Chapel. According
to the popular story (backed by family letters), at fourteen years of age Mozart was
visiting Rome when he first heard the piece during the Wednesday service. Later that
day, he wrote it down entirely from memory, returning to the Chapel that Friday to
make minor corrections. Less than three months after hearing the song and transcribing
it, Mozart had gained fame for the work and was summoned back to Rome by Pope Clement
XIV, who showered praise on him for his feat of musical genius and awarded him the
Chivalric Order of the Golden Spur on July 4, 1770.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen!
The Good Old Way
Traditional, arr. UVU Deep Green
Kade Bennett & Josh Scribner, soloists
“This selection, arranged and harmonized by the choir, represents disparate traditions of oral transmission with three subsequent versions of the same tune: 1. The Good Old Way, 2. Come, let us all go Down, and 3. Down to the River to Pray.” - Dr. Criddle

Brittney Stradling, conductor
O, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry,
Poor banished children of Eve;
To thee do we send up our sighs,
Mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
Thine eyes of mercy toward us;
And after this our exile,
Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.

Let my prayer arise in Thy sight as incense;
And let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice.
Lord, I call upon Thee, hear me;
Receive the voice of my prayer, when I call upon Thee.
Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth,
And keep watch over the door of my lips.
Incline not my heart to evil words,
Nor to make excuses for my sins.
