Come to the Campus Composting Tour on 22 February, 12:00-12:50 p.m. and get to know compost from start to finish. This is a hands-on tour - each guest will have the opportunity to build a compost bin, layer it with materials and worms, including how to breed worms and use worm traps. Vermicompost produced from this system is used to make compost tea. We will also discuss the ingredients used to culture symbiotic bacteria and fungi. This system is unique because it smells like the rainforest and composts very quickly. During this tour, you will learn about five different compost types and how to produce them with garbage (e.g., food scraps and green waste). The UVU compost program provides opportunities for employees, students and the public to learn sustainable, regenerative and highly therapeutic practices which directly improve the quality of life for humans and the beautiful planet we inhabit. Together we can green the soils of our home and provide opportunities at the same time.
Our tour guide: In 2020, Tyler Hacking proposed a UVU compost program to president Tuminez as she purchased some of his vermicompost from his small business during VENTURECON, which he won that round. After graduating in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Botany, he approached UVU Grounds Director, John Hansen, with his proposal and was able to build the UVU compost program over one year, using materials from UVU surplus and waste materials from campus. During 2023, Tyler also taught compost and nutrition hybrid classes for UVU community education to four age groups: Grades 3-6, Grades 7-12, adults and seniors.

Community Education Opportunities

UVU’s Sustainability initiative is reaching out the community. As we tackle the problems of living sustainably in Utah Valley, Community Education is key in spreading the knowledge and know-how beyond the University. UVU Community Education serves Utah Valley and the Heber area with classes that anyone in the community can take! One simple thing that you can do to help live more sustainably is to cut down on residential water use. Community Education is helping the community learn sustainability concepts through gardening classes on the Orem and Lehi campuses this Spring semester! Home gardens can be much more water-wise than commercial plantings or lawns. They are also a good way to recycle natural resources. Orem campus will host several gardening classes this Spring that will teach how to grow your own herbs, care for a fruit tree, or pack a salad full of vegetables into each square foot of your garden. In Lehi learn from our UVU GRIT Garden Director in a series of classes aimed to teach how to design your growing spaces well, lower water consumption, make your yard a livable space with less grass, and to reuse, and recycle through gardening! Her series will walk you through design, seed starting, caring for seedlings, and transplanting them, and caring for your green space all summer! Check them out online, or you can swing by UVU’s GRIT community garden and see it all in real life as we grow thousands of pounds of fresh produce for our student community! Stay and weed a while with us! Find more cool ideas about living sustainably with these community classes: Green Design: Designing Sustainably, Indigo Shibori Dyeing, Small Engine Repair, Sourdough, Cheese, or any of our great cooking classes!
