2025 Student Ethics Symposium

"Living Our Ideals"

Ethics & Participatory Democracy

The Center for the Study of Ethics is accepting proposals for the 2024 Student Ethics Symposium on Monday, April 7th, 2025. Our orienting theme this year is entitled “Living Our Ideals: Ethics and Participatory Democracy.”  We invite proposals on a range of topics related to ethics in public life. This is an interdisciplinary symposium that invites proposals from a variety of academic disciplines.

  • What ethical principles should guide political debate?
  • How does disinformation affect self-governance? What should be done about it?
  • Should voting be obligation for all citizens?
  • How can we improve the quality and integrity of elections?
  • What role should celebrity culture play in our political discourse?
  • Should the United States abandon a two-party system?
  • What types of activist roles can UVU students play on campus?
  • How can participatory democracy be more understanding of cultural and social groups?
  • What ethical dilemmas might students from diverse cultural backgrounds face when engaging in democracy?
  • How can ethical communication foster relationships between groups with opposing political views?
  • What role do societal relationships and community connections play in motivating people to engage in democratic processes, such as voting?

Student's have the option to participate in different formats such as paper presentation, discussion facilitation, panel discussion, or poster presentation. Please indicate your desired format of participation in your application. Students only need an abstract of their project in order to apply, and have the option to work with the Center for the Study of Ethics to develop their ideas by the time of the Symposium.
