It is not enough to simply build a disaster supply kit. There are actually 3 major
parts to being PREPARED with a disaster supply kit.
1. Create your kit. Be sure to cover all 12 areas of preparedness when building your
kit
Shelter, Clothing, and Fire
Water
Food
Hygiene and Sanitation
Light and Power
First Aid
Communication
Safety and Security
Tools and Personal Items
Cooking
Important Documents and Money
Transportation
2. Become familiar with the items in your kit. An item does you no good if you do
not know how to use it and an emergency situation is no time to figure it out. Use
items in your kit routinely to become familiar with them. Replace any used items as
needed.
3. Rotate and restock. It is best to check your emergency kit every 6 months. This
allows you to ensure nothing has expired or in need of replacement. In addition, it
allows you to change out seasonal clothing in your kit.
