What is Academic Dismissal?

Academic Dismissal occurs when a student who is on Suspension status fails to comply with the conditions set forth by the Academic Standards Committee.

To remove your AD hold, you must sit out for at least one full calendar year and submit a dismissal petition to return.

Dismissal is NOT a Punishment

Suspension and Dismissal are NOT a punishment.

The petition process helps us to understand the challenges and barriers to your academic progress, so we can put in place programs, resources, and conversations that will help you be successful and reach your academic goals.

Petition Deadlines

Be aware of the deadlines:

  • Just sitting out will not be enough to allow you to return.
  • Your petition must be turned in on time to be considered for the semester you want.

DEADLINES:

  • February 1 - Summer return 
  • March 15 - Fall return
  • June 1 - Fall return (for students suspended after Spring)
  • September 15 - Spring return

Hints for the Petition

  1. BE HONEST. We want as much information as possible so we can help you. This may feel vulnerable, but we’re here to support you.
  2. BE DETAILED. Explain what happened each semester. Sometimes students write vague statements like, "I didn't study." Why? Did you not manage your time well? Are you not sure how to review for quizzes and exams? Were you working too much? Were you struggling with anxiety or depression?
  3. BE CONCISE. One page is typically enough to explain your situation.
  4. BE PREPARED. To put your best foot forward, and in order to catch any errors, we recommend writing the letter in a Word document before copying and pasting it to the digital petition form.

The Petition Review Process

Academic Standards Office and Council on Academic Standards Review

First, the Academic Standards Office reviews all the petitions and makes recommendations.

[For example, if a student does not have a major, they may recommend a student take career assessments. If a student struggles with math, they may recommend a visit to the math lab.]

After the Academic Standards Office has made their recommendations, they hold a meeting with the Council on Academic Standards.

The Academic Standards Office presents the students' petitions along with their recommendations. The Council on Academic Standards makes additional suggestions and approves or disapproves of recommendations.

Review Time Frame and Results

The petition review process generally takes between 4-6 weeks.

After the Council has made their recommendations, the Academic Standards Office prepares response letters.

Each petitioning student will receive an email response to their UVU email account regarding their approval to return.

After You Receive Your Letter

Before they can register, students must meet with their Academic Standards Counselor/Coach to review recommendations, requirements, and plans for return, as well as removing holds.

You will have a monthly grade check as part of your requirements for Dismissal return.

You MUST get a 2.0 for the semester you return or you will be moved back to Dismissal status.
