Petitions

Suspension and Dismissal are NOT a punishment. The petition process helps us to understand the challenges and barriers to your academic progress, so we can put in place programs, resources, and conversations that will help you be successful and reach your academic goals.

Petition Deadlines

  • February 1 - Summer return
  • March 15 - Fall return
  • June 1 - Fall return (for students suspended after Spring)
  • September 15 - Spring return

Petition Review Process

  1. The petition review process generally takes about four to six weeks from the submission deadline.
  2. The Academic Standards Intervention & Support Team (ASIST) reviews all petitions, makes recommendations, and maintains students’ anonymity.
  3. The Council on Academic Standards (CAS), made up of faculty from across campus, reviews petitions and approves recommendations.
  4. Academic Coaching & Educational Standards sends a response to students’ UVU email accounts regarding their approval to return to UVU. Before they can register, students must meet with their Standards Counselor/Coach to review recommendations, requirements, and plans for return.

Tips for Writing the Petition Letter

  1. BE HONEST. We want as much information as possible so we can help you. This may feel vulnerable, but we’re here to support you.
  2. BE DETAILED. Explain what happened each semester. Sometimes students write vague statements like, "I didn't study." Why? Did you not manage your time well? Are you not sure how to review for quizzes and exams? Were you working too much? Were you struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or a learning disability?
  3. BE CONCISE. One page is typically enough to explain your situation.
  4. BE PREPARED. To put your best foot forward, and in order to catch any errors, we recommend writing the letter in a Word or Google doc before copying and pasting it to the digital petition form.
