Dr. Eugene Seeley - Offshoring Production

Yesterday, the UVU Business Resource Center had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Eugene Seeley for the World Trade Center luncheon.

Every month, the WTC Utah sets up a luncheon to offer education and insight about international trade, manufacturing, offshoring, and trade deals. For this month’s topic, the WTC Utah brought in Dr. Seeley to talk about when and why to offshore production.

Dr. Seeley is an international management professor at UVU and he gave an informative presentation about offshore production and what conditions to look for before offshoring. From the individual company’s finances, to the local expertise in a foreign country, and the cultural conflicts that could arise, Dr. Seeley explained that all of those things need to be taken into consideration. He even explained to one of the audience members who asked if there was a clear threshold to offshore production, that it depends on various factors such as labor complexity, the industrial expertise of the area, and the project size.

He also took the time to discuss shipping, labor, and traveling costs that can impact offshore decisions and production. Dr. Seeley’s presentation helped business owners in the audience learn more about offshoring and outsourcing. It is safe to say that this luncheon has helped them make informed decisions about this complex topic.
