1Million Cups - Shannon Custom Rings

Inspired by their own unsavory past with ring shopping, they worked together to create an experience that not only changes the way people can shop for rings, but it also adds a unique, custom touch.

A wedding ring should remind you of the happiest moment in your life that has yet to come. The anticipation and the nerves of getting down on one knee and waiting for that ecstatic and joyful “Yes!” A wedding ring shouldn’t remind you of the hassle, stress, and the countless hours spent jumping from jeweler to jeweler just to drop thousands of dollars on a ring that wasn’t quite right.

Last week at 1 Million Cups, couple David and Shannon Baird, aimed to change this dreaded experience to one that would be simple and meaningful to their clients. Inspired by their own unsavory past with ring shopping, they worked together to create an experience that not only changes the way people can shop for rings, but it also adds a unique, custom touch. Their business model is tailored for clients with busy lifestyles who don’t have time to commit to the methods of traditional ring shopping. David explained that the whole process of designing a ring and seeing the results can all be done through texting. They are able to render a ring, including color and shine, and show the ring on a hand with the exact ring size.

During the development of their business model, they tried implementing their business as a middle man to other jewelry stores. However, they were not very successful with this business model and decided to do the whole process themselves without working with another company. This decision contributed to their current success in their company. Shannon also helped push for a more independent business model as she has an entrepreneurial background and is now involved in the social presence of Shannon Custom Rings.

David expressed gratitude for the people at the Business Resources Center and their willingness to help their business grow. The feedback opportunity that presenting Shannon Custom Rings at 1 Million Cups has given him was incredibly beneficial in guidance for the company's next steps.

David and Shannon find satisfaction in their customers having a great ring shopping experience. David explained that clients also get to learn about different metals, diamonds and gems, and styles which unintentionally added an educational element to ring shopping. They both hope to take their business internationally to find other people to work with such as another big jewelry company that has a strong presence in the global industry.

Word of advice for starting your own business:

Just start right away, start selling, and start small. You’ll learn exactly what your customers want.
