December CEO Circle with Jackie Borget

In December, the Business Resource Center hosted Jackie Borget, a Project Manager from the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity (GOEO), to share insights into the support available for small businesses through grants.

Borget detailed the array of services provided by GOEO, including mentorship programs, topic matching, and workshops tailored for small businesses. The spotlight was on two primary grant categories:

  1. Small Business In Research (SBIR)
  2. Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR)

A notable difference lies in collaboration. The SBIR Grant offers flexibility, allowing businesses to choose whether to collaborate with a university, another organization, or work independently. In contrast, the STTR grant requires a partnership with a university for eligibility. While there are other nuances, this collaborative aspect stands out as a primary difference.

Eligibility for these grants is straightforward:

  • Be a for-profit organization
  • Maintain 51% US ownership
  • Have fewer than 500 employees

Looking ahead, the BRC is excited to announce ongoing support from Borget and the GOEO team. Monthly sessions, every 4th Wednesday (excluding December), will provide an opportunity for small businesses keen on exploring government funding to fuel their growth and progress.
