As the weather gets colder the need for warmth in our local communities gave Utah Valley University Rotaractors opportunity to give back. During the week of November 23, 2023, participating in a service project “Coats for Kids” was a combined effort for UVU Rotaractors with the Orem-Lindon Rotary Club members. Taking action and getting involved with community efforts is the essence of the Rotary Club. Following the lead of the Rotary club and their mission to help the community in the best way they can, UVU Rotaractors shared in the experience of making a difference in the lives of those around us.

With the support and encouragement of Orem-Lindon Rotary Members, Rotaractor Louyoko, UVU Rotaractors  Stephan Atkinson and I were able to visit Cherry Hills Elementary in Orem, Utah to drop off warm coats for those in need. I come from a community that takes pride in helping one another so to be a part of this club and be able to continue the work of helping those in need is one of the best ways to keep myself centered. Here at Cherry Hills Elementary we learned that not only do they have a closet for  families who are in need of warm coats, they also have a pantry that provides food as well.

This experience has opened my eyes to the needs of the local communities and the ways in which we can continue to support them in their hard times. More than anything it was humbling to see how impactful these efforts are.

To deliver bags and bags of coats that we know are going to help those who are in need and see how excited school administrators were to receive them has a way of refocusing my perspective of the world. To give back to communities is just one of many ways to leave our impact in their world and inspire others.

To have participated in this event even in the smallest capacity has made me so grateful to be a part of the Rotaract Club here at UVU. So much can be learned when you take the time to experience a world outside of your everyday life.

I learned that the best thing I can provide others is my time and effort. Especially at this time of year of the holidays and spreading light, as a community are capable of creating the best of changes.

cathy 3As per Cathy Ambrose, this is Bonneville’s pantry. They have huge needs in their community. They have a part time employee who runs it.

I can only hope to continue to pay it forward and give back to this community that has embraced me.
