The UN-FAO Mountain Partnership 2022 Annual Report highlighted the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University (UVU) Contribution to SMD Advocacy

The Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University (UVU) was highlighted in the UN-FAO Mountain Partnership 2022 Annual Report for the advocacy of the mountain women and communities during the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66).

The Student-Engaged Learning (SEL) model developed at Utah Valley University (UVU) was featured for the second time in the report. SEL encourages both traditional and non-traditional students to gain professional skills while addressing real-world issues as a group on local and international levels with university faculty serving as mentors. During the United Nations 66th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66), on March 21, 2022, members of Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at UVU, hosted through  SEL the parallel event titled, “Inclusive Student-Engaged Learning Model to Empower Mountain Women Globally,” which was co-sponsored by the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS), and Utah-China Friendship Improvement Sharing Hands Development and Cooperation, a non-government organizations in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

During the event, statements were provided by 19 speakers: Wendy Jiang, NGO representative at the UN for the Utah-China Friendship Improvement Sharing Hands Development and Cooperation, UIMF members such as: Dallas Karren, Alitha Thompson, Stephan Atkinson, Kory Armitstead, William Clark, Cody Conklin, Alexandria Lamb, Nicholas Bradley, Tristin Juarez-Smith, Carolina Yauyo, Rusden Scott, Noyonkhangai Enkhtur, Snow College student Catalina Cusano, faculty and students from Osh Technological University such as: Dr. Almaz Atabekov, Tatiana Panfilenko, Nazik Erkinbek kyzy,  Gulnura Amatova and Maisalbek Zakirov.              

UIMF members and SEL model to advocate for the Mountain Women and families have been recognized in the written statement of the RANS and Utah-China Friendship Improvement Sharing Hands Development and Commerce, (Utah China FISH D&C), another NGO in consultative status with ECOSOC. On December 13, 2021, ECOSOC distributed the statement as an official document of the UN.

The Mountain Partnership Annual Report also highlighted the joint efforts of UIMF, faculty and students from Snow College in Utah and Osh Technological University (OshTU), Osh, the Kyrgyz Republic, in co-hosting through SEL the 13th observation of International Mountain Day (IMD) at UVU.
