On October 8, 2022, the Orem-Lindon Rotary club met with Utah Valley University (UVU) Rotaract students to plant trees at Orem City's Nielson Grove Park. Nielson Grove Park was founded in 1880 by a Danish immigrant, Jorgen Nielson, making it the oldest park in Utah.

This planting project is only a chapter in the Utah Rotary’s Environmental Protection Initiative. Half the funds from a matching grant given by the Utah Trees non-profit organization will be used in the spring to plant more trees in Lindon, Utah.

To start the project, Dean Robinson, an Orem-Lindon Rotarian, gave an overview of how to plant the trees and unite to accomplish the task. Earlier in the week, Orem City volunteers generously pre-dug the holes in preparation for our service project, allowing us to get right to work. Rotaractors and Rotarians planted 5 trees lining the park's gorgeous northwest side. Before planting the trees, we took special care to remove debris, including large rocks, branches, and trash. Rotaract and Orem-Lindon Rotary club members worked together to take the trees out of planters, deepen holes, and move the trees to cover roots with dirt adequately. After the trees were planted, wheelbarrows carted away any excess dirt.

Many hands do make light work. 8 UVU Rotaractors and 14 Rotarians participated in this beautification project. Being engaged in service, a great cause, bonded together students and established members of the community. The time passed all too quickly. Many wished we could continue to plant more.

One of my takeaways from this service experience was the unifying power of charity. The Orem-Lindon Rotary and UVU Rotaract club members come from various walks of life, some dentists or business leaders, and, in my case, a student.

No matter the current timeline of our lives, we are all the same when we serve; we work together to benefit our local and global communities. These trees will continue to grow and become an emblem of service rendered by its citizens for generations to come.
