Nikki Ivie on Qualia

Nikki Ivie, a philosophy major at UVU, recently published her paper “The Positive Illusion of Qualia” in Dianoia, The Undergraduate Philosophy Journal of Boston College. Nikki argues that philosophers who say that the subjective quality of experience is nonexistent fail to consider why it seems so real. She argues that the subjective quality of experience is an illusion, but one that facilitates our relationships and gives value, meaning, and pleasure to life. Her paper raises important questions about how well we can know ourselves, and what kinds of beliefs enable us to live well. She grapples with the consequences that theoretical questions can have for practical issues. Her paper has implications for the very nature of philosophical inquiry. Congratulations, Nikki!
