The Center for the Study of Ethics is hosting its annual Ethics Awareness Week from Sept. 24-28 in the UVU Clarke Building, room 511.
This four-day event features 19 sessions including panel discussions, lectures, film screenings, workshops, and discussion groups. Key sessions will focus on the ethics of public discourse and the quest for truth in maintaining a healthy democracy.
The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Julian Zelizer on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 11:30 a.m. in the Clarke Building, room 101b. His remarks are entitled, “Truth and Lies in Modern Politics: Can We Restore Trust in the Public Square.”
Zelizer is the Malcolm Stevenson Forbes Professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University, and a CNN political analyst. He is the author and editor of over 15 books including his most recent work “The Fierce Urgency of Now: Lyndon Johnson, Congress, and the Battle for the Great Society.” Zelizer has published over 800 op-eds, including his weekly column on CNN’s website. He is a regular commentator on radio, television, and in print.
“This week will provide an excellent opportunity to explore our common commitments as citizens and how to engage differences in the public square,” said Brian D. Birch, director of the Center for the Study of Ethics. “The keynote speaker sets the tone for the week, and Dr. Zelizer is among the finest scholars in the world on American political culture.”
The week also includes the Excellence in Ethics Award presented this year to John T. Kesler, founder and chair of the Salt Lake Civil Network. As an attorney, facilitator, and consultant, he served as communities editor of National Civic Review, and has led several studies relating to civic engagement and community movements.
“I cannot think of a more deserving recipient than John Kesler,” said Elaine E. Englehardt, a UVU distinguished professor of ethics. “His community-building work in Utah has been a national model and the envy of other cities around the nation. It is an honor to recognize his work.”
All events are free and open to the public. All events will be held in room 511 of the Clarke Building, except for the keynote address. More information can be found on the Center for the Study of Ethics website at www.uvu.edu/ethics.
