Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts to perform ‘I Never Saw Another Butterfly’

butterflyUtah Valley University’s School of the Arts will perform “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” Sept. 28-29 and Oct. 1-6.

Similar to “The Diary of Anne Frank,” the play is shared from the vantage point of a child during World War II. Raja, one of the children who survived the Terezin ghetto camp, shares her story of living in the concentration camp while retaining in memory a world filled with butterflies and flowers with others in the camp.

Poems, writings, and paintings of nearly 15,000 children who were taught art in secret tell the stories of the Terezin ghetto. The majority of the works can be seen at the Jewish Museum in Prague.

This play is an opportunity for families to experience the events of World War II through the eyes of children and youth,” said Kynsie Kiggins, coordinator at the Theatre for Young Audiences. “The way in which these children have such a strong spirit and beautiful vision in humanity allows for them to resist the fear and hate that surrounded them.”

As a part of the Theatre for Young Audiences program, there are student actors in the play as well as children from the community who have learned from UVU theater students how to prepare for and put on a work of art.

“The show portrays the characters with respect and dignity,” Kiggins said. “Characters grow through love, unity, faith, acceptance, and hope to continue to see that the world is full of loveliness.”

The play is recommended for ages 10 and up, due to the subject matter.

“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” will be performed in the Noorda Black Box Theater on Sept. 28-29 and Oct. 1-6, with evening performances at 7:30 and Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $14 for the general public, $10 for students and seniors, and $5 for children under 18. To purchase advance tickets, visit uvu.universitytickets.comor Campus Connection. Tickets will also be available at the door.
