Utah Valley University student team wins Utah SHRM Student Case Competition

shrmteamHuman resource students from Utah Valley University won the Student Case Competition at the recent Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Utah State Student Case Competition held at Weber State University – Davis Campus.

This “realistic job preview” enabled team members to leverage their course knowledge and apply that knowledge to a real-life human resource situation. During the competition, each team analyzed and solved a business case by preparing a written executive summary and a 15-minute oral presentation. This required integrated HR thinking, ethical decision-making, and strong communication and presentation skills. Written executive summaries were submitted and graded prior to the event. Oral presentation rounds were judged on-site by a panel of certified SHRM professionals local to Utah in the human resource profession.

Five teams, comprised of undergraduate students from Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, University of Utah, Weber State University, and the University of Wyoming, competed in a Case Competition on March 2, 2018. Utah Valley University placed first, with Brigham Young University taking second place, and the University of Utah taking third place.

“SHRM’s state-wide Student Case Competitions offer a unique opportunity for HR students to apply in-class learning to real-world HR scenarios and showcase their knowledge to seasoned HR practitioners,” said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP, east divisional director at SHRM. “These local events also enhance students’ perspectives on the value and importance of what it means to be a member of the HR community and career partners with SHRM as they embark on their HR professional pursuits.”
