UVU's Short Attention Span Theater engages students for 10 minutes at a time

Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts, in conjunction with the Department of Theatrical Arts, is proud to present Short Attention Span Theater. The performances will be held in the eXBox Theatre on April 5 - 7 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Short Attention Span Theater, or SAST, is an evening of 10 minute plays, written by students, designed by students, and stage managed by students. The scripts have been developed and rehearsed during the semester, culminating in a performance of the plays. SAST has been a part of the UVU theater season for a number of years, but this has been the first year it has been offered as a class. One of UVU’s core themes is engaged learning, which SAST has taken full advantage of.

Page Petrucka, actress and adjunct instructor, has been advising the students of SAST and sums up what this process has been like for them. “A 10 minute play is a unique play structure in and of itself. It needs to be complete. In other words, it must have a beginning, middle, and end, all in 10 minutes. The playwrights have done a brilliant job of this.” Students have been part of the development, rehearsal, and performance process for these new scripts. It has been the epitome of engaged learning for UVU theater students.

The performances will be held in the eXBox Theatre on April 5 - 7 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. There is only one entrance and exit that will be used for both actors and audience members, so attendees will need to be seated prior to show time. Late arrivals won’t be able to be accommodated. Tickets for the event are $5 for the general public and $3 for students.
