UVU contemporary dance ensemble to perform works by prolific female choreographers

kaylaUtah Valley University’s School of the Arts, in conjunction with the Department of Dance, is proud to present Hear Us Roar. The performances will be held in the Ragan Theater on March 8-10 at 7:30 p.m.

Celebrate with UVU’s Contemporary Dance Ensemble the unique and inspiring voices of some of today’s most exciting and prolific female choreographers and artistic directors. The dancers will perform works by Oni Dance Company artistic director Maria Gillespie, Utah Metropolitan Ballet co-director Heather Gray, Penguin Lady Dance Collective artistic director Natosha Washington, and CDE artistic director Monica Campbell. Additionally, filmmaker Aleisha Paspuel will premiere a new dance for film piece titled In a Picture a Thousand Words with CDE members. Experience the joy of this explosive evening of contemporary modern dance.

Campbell summed up this event by saying, “For this show our students are successfully navigating multiple genres and in-depth subject matters within the discipline of dance. Department of Dance ballet lecturer Heather Gray is premiering a contemporary ballet piece on our advanced modern/contemporary dance students. Our dancers also have the opportunity to work with two 16-foot-long tables in a re-staging of Natosha Washington’s epic work, TAROT, which was performed to sold out audiences last December in Salt Lake City.”

The evening will close with a premier of Turas, a new piece by Monica Campbell which delves into the conflict and journey towards peace in Northern Ireland. Campbell received an Ethics Center Faculty Fellowship that allowed her to accompany UVU’s peace and justice studies study abroad trip to Northern Ireland. Turas is a culmination of this research.

Tickets for the events are $8 for children, students, and seniors, and $12 for the general public. Groups of ten or more may receive discounted ticket prices.
