Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts, in conjunction with the Department of Theatrical Arts and the Theatre for Youth and Education (TYE) Center, is proud to present Tamales and Roses by Joanna Kraus. The performances will be held in the Noorda Theatre on March 16 and 17 at 6:30 p.m. with a sensory-friendly performance the March 17 at 2 p.m.
Tamales and Roses was commissioned by John Newman, assistant professor and director of the the TYE Center, from world renowned Theatre for Young Audiences playwright Joanna Kraus. In Tamales and Roses, little Anna Luisa is thrilled to be the flower girl at her older sister's wedding. But as the wedding march plays, she's overcome by stage fright and unable to walk down the aisle. She then believes she's ruined the wedding. This beautiful story told in both English and Spanish helps adults remember how seemingly minor mistakes loom large in the eyes of children.
“Cast from a rainbow of ethic and cultural backgrounds, the student actors have learned to respectfully portray traditions outside of their own experience.” Love continued to emphasize the importance of diversity by saying, “This lovely tale of a Hispanic family builds bridges between other cultures as we realize how in celebrations we are more alike than different.”
The performances will be held in the Noorda Theatre on March 16 and 17 at 6:30 p.m. with a sensory-friendly performance the 17 at 2 p.m. Children ages five to eight will enjoy interacting with actors, singing, dancing, and laughing as the story of Anna Luisa unfolds. This show tours elementary schools along the Wasatch front March-April with only three public performances hosted at UVU. Tickets for the event are $5 for the general public.
