Utah Valley University hosted 700 middle and junior high school students on campus Friday, July 13, for the Sci-Tech EXPO, a one-day event designed to spark student interest in pursuing college studies in preparation for career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The goal of the expo was to create STEM career awareness and insight of the practical application of a STEM degree through engaging and memorable hands-on presentations, workshops, competitions, live demonstrations and keynote speakers.
Business and industry professionals presented innovative, interactive 50-minute workshops. Students had the opportunity to personally interact with members of various corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and universities, providing a chance to ask questions and learn what it takes to become a STEM professional.
Activities spanning a widespectrum of scientific and technical fields were presented such as computer gaming, digital media, sound engineering, cancer research, space exploration, the physics of flying and more. Other activities were bottle rocket competitions, lunch at the UCCU Ballpark, and the IMAX movie “Hidden Universe.”
Organizers of the expo said by bringing together corporate, scientific, and community leaders to provide programming and pre-workforce development opportunities to the next generation of STEM professionals, students will learn how important and integral STEM careers are in keeping our Nation competitive, globally secure, and prosperous.
The Sci-Tech EXPO is part of UVU PREP, a free STEM program that runs for three consecutive summers, providing rigorous academic instruction, educational hands-on projects, challenging homework assignments, daily career awareness and field trips.
