Greek politician speaks to UVU students on keeping identity and heritage in a globalized world

Hans Koepsell As part of UVU’s Office for Global Engagement’s efforts, Adonis Georgiadis, vice president of Greek opposition party New Democracy, addressed UVU students on Jan. 10.

Georgiadis was previously the Minister of Health in Greece from 2013-14.

“We have to find a way to combine the great heritage we have with a future in the modern world of internet, new technology, and globilization, and find a way to do it by keeping our identity,” Georgiadis said. “The problem with the 21st century is, we have advanced technology, free trade, a much better standard of living… but what about humans? Are we more happy?”

Eugenia Manolidou, Georgiadis’ wife, is also exploring possibilities for collaborating with UVU. She, along with being a conductor and TV host, is also a Greek classical composer.

Baldomero Lago, UVU’s chief international officer, is working with Manolidou to put together a workshop or master class for students and later on a composition with UVU Symphony combining the sounds of ancient Greece with Native American sounds and dance, similar to a piece she did that was used for the Bejing Olympics that combined old Greek and ancient Chinese music.

UVU’s Office for Global Engagement’s next event is a global spotlight on Spain. Manuel Valle Muñoz, trade commissioner for the Consulate of Spain in Los Angeles, will speak on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 11:30 a.m. in UVU’s Ragan Theater.
