UVU ballet students take inspiration from Roots of Knowledge exhibit

dancersOREM, UTAH- Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts, in conjunction with the Department of Dance, is proud to present Dance Out of Glass. The performances will be held in the Ragan Theatre on Feb. 8 and10 at 7:30 p.m. with an additional performance on Feb.10 at 2 p.m.

Since being installed in Nov. of 2016, The Roots of Knowledge stain glass art exhibit has been used as inspiration for a number of dance productions. Dance Out of Glass utilizes UVU’s own Repertory Ballet Ensemble to bring this piece of art to life. Jamie Johnson, assistant professor of dance, described how a piece of art can be used to inspire dance. She stated, “Each piece of the program draws direct connections to panels from the mural. Throughout the concert, audience members will be taken through the windows of time in classical and contemporary ballet technique.”

As the resident performing company of the ballet program at UVU, the Repertory Ballet Ensemble will be performing a mixture of classical and contemporary ballet created by choreographers from near and far. Attendees will get a first-hand taste of work designed by guest choreographers Anna Mansbridge and Brooklyn Draper. Mansbridge brings her Baroque expertise while Draper, past winner of the annual Choreography Design Competition, brings in a contemporary piece.

Dance Out of Glass will also include a couple of numbers from the UVU Ballroom Dance Company’s concert inspired by the Roots of Knowledge windows.

Dance Out of Glass will be presented in the Ragan Theatre on Feb. 8 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on the Feb 10. Tickets for the events are $8 for children, students, and seniors, and $12 for the general public.
