You’ve seen it on TV. Forensic scientists pour over a crime scene in an attempt to find those responsible. Now, see how it’s really done. Two cars will be lit on fire Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at 4:30 p.m. The fires will be contained to the area behind the Emergency Services Building located at 3131 Mike Jense Parkway, Provo, Utah 84601. UVU’s Fire Recruit Candidate Academy will allow the cars to burn for 10 minutes before being doused. A Utah Valley University videographer will be present to capture the burn.
Wednesday, Feb. 13,between 10:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. UVU Forensic Science students enrolled in the Advanced Crime Scene Techniques course will learn how to document the complex vehicle fire crime scene. They will collect evidence, and process collection while looking for the ignition source of the fire, and observing the fire patterns and damage that will provide clues about how it originated, and spread throughout the vehicle.
Students and their instructor will be available to talk about what they learn from the destruction, and why it’s critical to understand how to find clues in the rubble. Interview availability will occur on Wednesday morning. Video of the ignition and the cars being doused will be made available if needed.
The demand for forensic scientists has never been higher as crime rates continue to rise. UVU offers the only Bachelor of Science degree in the state.
