OREM, UTAH- Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts, in conjunction with the Department of
Theatrical Arts, is proud to present “Seagull.” Performances will be held in the Noorda
Theater March 1-3 and 5-10.
“Seagull” is the first mainstage offering of 2018 from the Department of Theatrical Arts. Written by Anton Chekhov in 1895, the success of the play sealed his fate as one of the world’s greatest dramatists and catapulted Stanislavsky and the Moscow Art Theater to international prominence. Widely considered one of the top 100 plays of all time, this production highlights the heftiness and passion of Russian drama, incorporating movement, metaphor, and an ensemble/etude-based rehearsal process to uncover the timeless drama of this classic play.
Jeremy Sortore, assistant professor of voice & movement, emphatically stated, “Our cast has been working as a creative team since November, creating silent movement "etudes" that explore the themes and events of the play. They are, in a way, co-directors: flexing their creative muscles in a way most actors don't get to experience.” Sortore continued by saying, “We have a diverse, talented, and smart artistic team, both onstage and behind the scenes.”
Audience members can expect a kinetic and visceral ensemble piece about art and success, love and obsession, living and dying, whose characters inhabit a magically ordinary Russian lakeside estate. Sortore concluded by saying, “The characters are flawed, funny, and beautiful. And although they were written over 100 years ago, you probably know them. We're excited to welcome you to our little piece of old Russia.”
“Seagull” will be presented in the Noorda Theatre March 1-3 and 5-10 at 7:30 p.m. There will be an additional performance on March 10 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for the events are $10 for students, and seniors, and $14 for the general public. Groups of 10 or more can receive a reduced ticket rate of $8 per ticket
Tickets can be purchased at www.uvu.edu/thearts/ or at the door.
