Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts, in conjunction with the UVU Symphony, presents “Slavic Passion.” The performance will be held in the Ragan Theater on Thursday, April 26,at 7:30 p.m.
When asked how such an event came about, director of orchestral studies Cheung Chau said, “A number of UVU students expressed their wish to perform Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Our guest artist, Blanka Bednarz, recently won a silver medal from Global Music Awards for her recording of Szymanowski’s works, and since both are Slavic, we suddenly found ourselves with a show.”
The Utah Regional Ballet will join the UVU Symphony to perform Szymanowski’s First Violin Concerto and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Bednarz will be the featured soloist for Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto. As a soloist, Bednarz has performed with the Hunan Symphony, Connecticut Virtuosi, Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, and Sinfonietta Polonia. She is also a member of Atma Trio.
“It is always a wonderful event collaborating with the Utah Regional Ballet and we are also very excited to be presenting the UVU premiere of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony,” said Chau. Shostakovich’s popular Fifth Symphony features many solos from the orchestra.
Szymanowski is equally demanding with its array of orchestral colors and effects. Chau added, “Szymanowski is romantic, impressionistic, and if he had lived longer, would most definitely have written for Hollywood.”
The performance will be held in the Ragan Theater on April 26, at 7:30 p.m.Tickets for the event are $5 for students and children, and $10 for community members.
