UVU percussion spotlights spanish music and culture in “Spanish Roots”

Utah Valley University’s School of the Arts, in conjunction with the UVU Percussion Ensemble, presents Spanish Roots. The performance will be held in Centre Stage on April 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Each year, UVU chooses a country as its global spotlight. The 2017-2018 school year is focusing on Spain, with various speakers and performances looking to detail the rich history of this country. UVU percussion is performing its Spanish Roots as part of the global spotlight program effort.

Doug Smith, associate professor and percussion coordinator, detailed what to expect from the event. He said, “We are featuring not just music by Spanish composers and musicians—we are showcasing the wide reaching impact and impression of spanish music in other cultures and countires.”

In addition to Spanish music, two Afro-Cuban works will also be featured alongside work by prominent Mexican composers.

The UVU percussion studio has grown into a force of excellence in Utah higher education. With a recent recording of works by Lou Harrison being released this spring on the Albany label, and a tour of small towns in Central Utah last fall—the group is earning a name of excellence and professionalism throughout the state. The effort exhibited by the students is heard in Spanish Roots.

Smith continued, “There is something for everyone, and each audience member will be entertained and wowed with virtuosic displays and sensitive phrasing.”

The performance will be held in Centre Stage on April 11 at 7:30 p.m.Tickets for the event are $5 for students and $10 for the general public.
