UVU hosts National Cybersecurity Expert Panel in conjunction with Data Privacy Day

Utah Valley University (UVU), the largest university in Utah – with support from the Washington D.C.-based National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the nation’s leading nonprofit, public-private partnership promoting the safe and secure use of the internet and digital privacy – is bringing together distinguished leaders in cybersecurity, law, and the media on Tuesday, January 24 for a special panel, Global Challenges in Cybersecurity: Protection, Privacy and Freedom of the Press.

The event coincides with Data Privacy Day, an international campaign led by NCSA and recognized annually on January 28 to create awareness about the importance of privacy and protecting personal information. Panelists will explore emerging challenges in cybersecurity globally, including protecting freedom of the press during an era of rising cyber attacks, while also looking at local privacy issues facing Utah businesses and families. With a newly minted Center for National Security Studies and impending cybersecurity graduate program set to launch fall semester 2017, UVU provides a fitting backdrop for the discussion.

Matt Sanders, Senior Director and General Manager of Deseret Digital Media, was recently named president of the Inter-American Press Association, a leading advocate of freedom of the press, whose member media companies hail from Latin America, Central America, and North America. He will share insights on the impact of cybersecurity on the integrity of media organizations throughout the Americas and beyond. Michael Kaiser, Executive Director of the National Cyber Security Alliance, engages diverse constituencies – business, government and other nonprofit organizations – in NCSA’s broad public education and outreach efforts to promote a safer, more secure and more trusted internet. Elaina Maragakis, Shareholder and Co-Chair of Cybersecurity and Privacy at Ray Quinney & Nebeker Attorneys at Law, will share Utah-centric concepts for implementing cybersecurity across business and government. Robert Jorgensen, an information security professional who directs the cybersecurity program at UVU, will also provide expert commentary on the state of cybersecurity as our world becomes more connected. Moderator Ryan Vogel, Director of the Center for National Security Studies and Assistant Professor of Law and National Security at UVU, is the founding director of the Center for National Security Studies at UVU, and a former senior policy advisor at the Pentagon for the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

The panel discussion will be held on Tuesday, January 24 from 10 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. at the internationally recognized Roots of Knowledge Bingham Gallery at UVU’s Fulton Library. The Cybersecurity Program, which works with the Center for National Security Studies at UVU, was established in 2012 with the help of a $3 million federal grant from the United States Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. The program covers topics such as advanced technical studies, managing cybersecurity operations, and cybersecurity’s role in the global community.
