Hundreds of Utah Valley University soccer fans and community members joined with Wolverine student-athletes and university leaders on April 9 to celebrate and break ground on the new UCCU Stadium, a soccer-specific facility to be built on UVU’s Orem Campus.
The new stadium is made possible by a multi-year donation to UVU from Utah Community Credit Union (UCCU) totaling $28.5 million, the largest single gift in UVU’s history. $20 million of that donation will go toward the new soccer stadium.
“The construction of UCCU Stadium is not just about building a new facility,” UVU Athletics Director Jared Sumsion said. “It's about acknowledging the accomplishments of our student-athletes and providing them with the resources they need to excel on the pitch, in the classroom, in the community, and in life.”
UCCU Stadium will be built on the west side of UVU’s Clyde Field, where the Wolverine men’s and women’s soccer teams currently play. The new 22,000-square-foot facility will include seating for up to 3,000 fans, team locker rooms, a team lounge for both programs, visiting team facilities, 400 additional chairback seats, covered plaza seating, 10 luxury suites, and an MLS-style press box with a broadcast booth.
“We anticipate with excitement the future events this stadium will host,” said Bret VanAusdal, president and CEO of UCCU. “This will be one of the premier soccer stadiums in all of the country. We look forward to cheering on the Wolverines in this stadium as they take collegiate soccer to a new level.”
The groundbreaking event included the opportunity for UVU and UCCU employees, along with the Wolverine men’s and women’s soccer players and staff, to turn the soil with ceremonial shovels in celebration.
“This stadium, for me, is all about community,” UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez said. “This is an investment in student success.”
UVU has consistently ranked in the top 15 nationally in attendance for both men’s and women’s soccer. Both Wolverine teams have made UVU athletics history by reaching the NCAA tournament — the men’s team is the first UVU team in any sport to have earned an at-large bid to an NCAA tournament, and the women’s team is the first to win an NCAA tournament game.
