When UVU's Student Life and Wellness Center recently reopened its doors under modified conditions, members were greeted by a new addition to the track wall.
The Student Life and Wellness Center (SLWC) on UVU’s Orem Campus is well-known for helping students maintain their social, physical, emotional, and mental health. When the facility recently reopened its doors under modified conditions, members were greeted by a new addition to the track wall. The slogan “Run Your Own Race” was built into the wall during the campus closure and now encourages the UVU community beyond just a physical application.
“The phrase ‘Run Your Own Race’ particularly spoke to me because of how resilient our Wolverines are,” said DaSheek Akwenye, director of UVU’s Recreation & Wellness. “As students progress both inside and outside of the classroom, it’s important to remember that each student’s journey is unique. As they strive to be successful, they need to focus and ‘run their own race’ which will lead them to achieve their goals.”
Over the past few months, the SLWC followed the government’s requests first for closure of all non-essential businesses followed by a modified reopening. During the recent campus closure, the No. 1 student-requested facility to reopen was the SLWC.
Akwenye accounts this to the fact that the SLWC “helps UVU students thrive amongst so much uncertainty, anxiety, and stress due to COVID-19. The SLWC provides an outlet and escape for our students to re-establish some connection back on campus.”
As UVU’s campus prepares for a unique semester this fall, the SLWC is following the CDC guidelines to ensure the safety and health of its patrons.
