These collections are of materials that are either owned or were created by UVU's Sutherland Archives, but reflect regional history beyond Utah Valley University.
Barry Maxfield is an avid fan of trains--their history, the many train lines that have run in the United States, and of their engines in particular. This is a sample of the thousands of photos of trains, engines, and tracks that he has donated to Utah Valley University's George Sutherland Archives.
These are wartime logs kept by Corporal Acel E. Thompson, who went to WWII in Europe in November, 1942. He was captured by the Germans in June, 1944, and held in several POW camps, then marched 600 miles, and finally liberated by American troops near Hanover, Germany in April, 1945.
This is a collection of interviews and reminiscences of veterans or their spouses, collected and made available by Col. Don Norton. It includes accounts from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Harry Bolam Saltair Photographs collection, donated by Andrew Cano, consists of nine photographs taken of the old Saltair resort by Harry Bolam. The photographs were taken in approximately 1965, before the resort finally burned to the ground in an arson fire in 1970.
This unique collection is comprised of materials such as family photographs, diaries, letters, and other historic documents that community members brought to scanning events that the Sutherland Archives held in Provo, Pleasant Grove, Orem, Heber City, Spanish Fork, Springville, Delta, and Fillmore for us to scan and make freely available online.
The J. Clayton Tullis Utah State Capitol Postcard Collection began when the donor, Mr. Tullis, volunteered as a tour guide at the Utah State Capitol and became fascinated with everything about the building. It consists of vintage postcards from the early twentieth century and a lithograph of the capitol building from the Governor's Office, commissioned to commemorate the Utah Centennial in 1996.
This digital-only collection consists of the annual reports of the Salt Lake City Fire Department for the years 1940-1941, 1944-1973, 1975-1989 and 2002-2003. The physical materials were loaned to the Sutherland Archives for scanning by Ray Schelble and Dan Walker of the Salt Lake City Fire Department through their collaboration with Steve Lutz of the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy, Utah Valley University.
The Shirley H. Platt Deaf Athletics Collection contains records generated primarily by the Utah Association of the Deaf, the American Athletic Association of the Deaf (AAAD), USA Deaf Basketball, Inc., (USADB), and the United States of America Deaf Sports Federation (USADSF.) Also included are historical materials from the regional sports subdivisions, including the Far West Athletic Association for the Deaf (FAAD,) which includes Utah.
The United States of America Deaf Basketball (USADB), established in 1945, is the premier national sports organization for deaf and hard of hearing basketball athletes and supporters. This collection contains records created by and/or used by United States of America Deaf Basketball, including correspondence, financial records, membership and registration records, meeting agendas and minutes, and much more.
The Utah Association of the Deaf (UAD), established in 1909, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the educational, social and economic welfare of the Deaf in Utah. The collection consists of UAD materials such as scrapbooks, meeting minutes, photograph collections, and other materials that help to document this association.
This collection consists of photos taken by various surveyors that were used in the creation of the 2008 and 2009 UCLS calendars, contributed by UVU professor and UCLS member Professor Dan Perry. Also included are UCLS historic documents such as the newsletter Utah Foresights, meeting minutes, and historic maps.
This scrapbook contains publications and newspaper clippings from 1936-1949 that focus on industrial growth, vocational education, defense training, and civic project opportunities undertaken in Utah County during that time.

This is a digitized copy of an unpublished document that contains basic information about Utah Lake that was compiled by Elton Leroy Taylor for his wife Ethel S. Taylor to present to her Daughters of Utah Pioneers Lakeview Camp class in 1988.
The Utah Peace Activists Oral History Project collection consists of transcripts and audio of interviews with Utahns who have been active in peace and justice endeavors since World War II. Dr. Kathryn French interviewed over 129 people in many walks of life who have devoted much of their lives to working for a better world.
This collection was begun by UVU American Studies instructor Michele Welch, who, along with many of her students researched prominent women in Utah, created biographies of them, and conducted oral history interviews with those still living. This collection currently contains transcripts, audio and video of most of the interviews.
This collection is comprised of interviews conducted by the George Sutherland Archives with veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, from the years between 2003 and 2011. It focuses primarily on veterans currently living in Utah County.
The Vietnam Era Oral History Project collection contains the transcripts and video of seventeen interviews with Vietnam War-era veterans. The interviews are conducted by Dr. William Cobb of UVU.
This collection of photographs, slides and diagrams is gathered from Mr. Von Del Chamberlain's own personal photography and research from his career in cultural astronomy. He was chief of the education and presentations division at the National Air and Space Museum, served as the director of the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City, and taught classes at Utah Valley State College (1996-2004).
Dr. Wilhelm (“Willy”) Burgdorfer was a world-renowned scientist and researcher in the field of medical entomology, and he discovered the causative agent of Lyme disease, which was subsequently named borrelia Burgdorferi in his honor. This collection incorporates items from his personal and professional life, including original research, laboratory work, photographs, research slides, and awards.
The World War II Veterans Oral History collection consists of oral history interviews done over the period 2003-2006 by students of then UVU Professor Kathren Brown as well as some conducted by the George Sutherland Archives. These collection includes the transcripts, audio, and video of the interviews of WWII veterans from Utah County and the surrounding area.
