War in DRC - Unveiling Global Complicity in Africa's Deadliest Conflict

Date: March 06

Time: 1pm

Location: LA 115

Description:

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is enormously rich in natural resources such as copper, gold, diamonds, and uranium. However, these valuable minerals are extracted by foreign multinational companies, who benefit more from them than the local people. Additionally, the DRC is embroiled in a conflict with militias from neighboring Rwanda in its eastern region, a war that has claimed millions of lives and persists despite international mediation between the parties at war. In this presentation, Jupuy N. Kukembila will provide an overview of the DRC, its people, and its vast mineral wealth. He will also explore the underlying causes of the conflict and the role of the international community in perpetuating the war.

Russian Movie - Three Seconds

Date: March 19

Time: 4pm

Location: CB 308

Description:
Three Seconds with English subtitles is an 2017 Russian sport drama film about the controversial victory of the Soviet national basketball over the US Olympic team, ending their 63-game winning streak, at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The U.S. team lost the basketball championship for the first time in 36 years. The final moments of the game have become one of the most controversial events in Olympic history. With play tied, the score table horn sounded during a second free throw attempt that put the U.S. ahead by one. But the Soviets claimed they had called for a time out before the basket and confusion ensued. The clock was set back by three seconds twice in a row and the Russians finally prevailed at the very last. The U.S. protested, but a jury decided in the USSR’s favor and Team USA voted unanimously to refuse its silver medals. The Soviet players were treated as heroes at home.
