GARY R. HERBERT UTAH LEGISLATIVE INTERNSHIP

Every Spring semester, the Gary R. Herbert Institute and Utah Valley University send a group of students to the State Capitol in Salt Lake City as interns for senators and representatives during the Utah Legislative Session. Interns work diligently during the 45-day session and have a front row seat to government operations and legislative processes. Legislative intern responsibilities may include constituent correspondence, media relations, policy research, social media outreach, bill tracking, and administrative duties.

Interns are paid a stipend of $4,000. The 2023 Utah State Legislative Session begins Tuesday, January 17th and ends Friday, March 1st. Students will need to be available full time starting January 2nd.

Eligibility

In order to apply an applicant must:

  • Be a current UVU student with Sophomore, Junior or Senior status
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Commit to all time requirements necessary for the internship
  • Have access to a laptop to use for the entire legislative session

 

This internship is open to students of all majors.

Preparatory Course & University Credit

During the first weeks of the internship, Herbert Legislative Interns are required to take preparatory courses offered through UVU’s Political Science and Communication Departments, the University of Utah Hinckley Institute, and the UVU Gary R. Herbert Institute.

A two-week, full day credited course is held at UVU during the first two weeks of January, followed by one week of on-site training with the Hinckley Institute held at the Utah State Capitol. These courses are designed to better equip students with the knowledge and skills to succeed during their time with the Utah Legislature. Interns will attend lunch seminars once a week throughout the session to discuss ongoing legislation, state policy, and local politics. The UVU preparation course, weekly seminars, and internship course typically provides 12 university credits.Contact the UVU Government Internship Manager for specific university credit needs.

Note: Specific graduation requirements are managed by individual departments and advisors.
