What is Lavender Graduation?

Lavender graduation is a special and inclusive ceremony held at UVU, to honor and celebrate the achievements and contributions of LGBTQ+ students. The term "Lavender" is derived from the lavender flower, which has historically been associated with the LGBTQ+ community.

This unique graduation event aims to provide a safe and affirming space for LGBTQ+ students, their allies, and the broader community. It will include speeches, recognition of notable accomplishments, and the awarding of lavender-colored cords that graduates can wear during their official commencement ceremony. Lavender graduation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and their resilience in overcoming adversity, while fostering a sense of unity and pride within the LGBTQ+ community on campus. It also serves to create a supportive and nurturing environment for graduates as they embark on the next phase of their lives, equipped with the memories of a memorable celebration of their identity and accomplishments.

Bailry Baird profile picture“Lavender Graduation is an important celebration to have each year because it gives space to celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ students. Being an LGBTQ+ student comes with unique challenges that can ultimately impact the success of students. Getting to the point of graduating is a huge accomplishment especially when you consider some of the struggle’s LGBTQ+ students may have faced while getting to that point. It’s about celebrating the success and resilience of the LGBTQ+ Community.”
