Thomas (known as “Tom” to his family) was always inquisitive. As soon as he was able to crawl, he started taking apart whatever items he could reach. He started with his toys, and as he got older, moved up to VCRs, speakers, and computer components. When he was seventeen, he took apart an entire car engine, rebuilt it successfully, and got the car running. This fascination with how things worked, and the mental challenge involved with it led him to the Computer Science program at UVU, where, for the first time in his academic experience, he excelled. Although shy and soft-spoken, he became a tutor in UVU’s Computer Science Lab and discovered that he had a talent for helping others. His kindness and patience made him a popular tutor in the lab.
 
Under the direction of a valued mentor, Professor Curtis Welborn, Thomas decided to combine his academic skills and his love of teaching to pursue a Ph.D. Unfortunately, his early death made it so he could not reach that goal. In recognition of Thomas, the Thomas Taylor Burton Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund provides the opportunity for other students like Thomas to flourish in the UVU Computer Science program.
